Startup Extreme is a very unique conference held annually in Bergen and Voss on Norway’s west coast. The event pulls together startups, scale-ups, international and local investors and media. Startups and scale-ups (like Auka) pitch, learn, network and of course, participate in extreme sports (!) in some of the most breathtaking surrounds in the world.

Despite Auka having been around the block a couple of times more than some of the other companies in attendance (learn more) we still consider ourselves a startup in scale-mode. As our CEO put it yesterday, “You don’t have to be a newcomer to still be a startup. If the scene you are transforming is old, big and slow, you are always a startup!”
We had the privilege of pitching on the fintech stage at Startup Extreme, Day 1 in Bergen on Tuesday the 12th June. Amongst a competitive line-up of Norwegian and international fintechs, including Luca Labs, BizBot, Zeipt, BigPay and Tillit Forsikrung, we pitched the Auka story to a jury panel. The Jury members were Karen Heskja – DNB Ventures, Ingibjörg Meyer-Myklestad – Argentum, Susanne Hannestad – FintechMundi, Clint Sookermany – KPMG and Simon Ruud – from TheFactory.

The announcement of the winner was made on the main stage during the closing presentation. We were super thrilled to hear our name called as the winner of the fintech pitch of the day!
We were then expected to give a short one-minute pitch summary to the crowd. The key learning from that experience is that I need to practice, practice, practice until my pitch nerves are calmer – despite knowing the Auka story inside out and being a very passionate advocate and true-believer, I still needed the reassurance of notes in hand.
Pitch in action – it doesn’t look too much like I’m referring to notes on my phone, right?
But, practice makes perfect. We’re just warming up to take our story further. We’ll continue scaling to bring better mobile payments to users, via banks and telcos, around the world.
